Ex-Denver Captain Wins $146,000 Lawsuit over Firing

A federal jury ruled in favor of Colley Fisher, who claimed she was fired by the Denver Fire Department as retaliation for filing two sexual discrimination complaints.

A former Denver fire captain was awarded $146,000 after a federal jury ruled Wednesday that her firing in 2015 was retaliation for two sexual discrimination complaints she had lodged against the department.

Colley Fisher had worked for the Denver Fire Department for 23 years, and in 2014, she filed complaints against two male firefighters, accusing them of harassment and creating a hostile work environment, KCNC-TV reports. According to Fisher's lawsuit, she was fired the following year over "her gender and in retaliation for her complaints of discrimination and retaliation."

Although the jury awarded Fisher for emotional distress damages, John Culver, Fisher's lawyer, told KCNC that the city could end up paying around $1 million after lost pay and attorney fees are factored in.
