Pasco County firefighters are teaching possibly the next generation of first responders thanks to a first-of-its-kind course at Fivay High School.

A new course at a Florida high school is teaching students how to become firefighters.

Fivay High School's fire science class is a first-of-its-kind program in Pasco County, WFTS-TV reports. The class is taught by Pasco County firefighter Mike Sherwin, along with Chief Shaun Whited and Mark Moe.

The class is open to all grade levels, and 140 students are currently enrolled in it. Students who pass the course will receive Fire 1 certification.

"For us in the fire department, as a community, we are teaching our young people here and putting them into our workforce," Sherwin told WFTS.

"Whether they end up in the fire service or not, it gives them an opportunity to learn skills outside of what is normally taught in high school," he added.
