A man convicted of stealing a firefighter's pickup truck from a CAL FIRE station the same day the massive Camp Fire broke out has been sentenced.
Willaim Erlbacher, 40, was given a 48-day jail term stemming from the theft, KHSL-TV reports. He also must serve three years on felony probation.
According to prosecutors, Erlbacher was one of two people of taking a firefighter's personal pickup truck CAL FIRE's Jarbo Gap station in November. Crews had been responding to the first day of the wildfire—the deadliest in California's history—when the theft happened, and security camera video showed the vehicle being taken, KRCR-TV reports.
The pickup truck was found days later at a home in Chico, its license plate and back window covered while it was parked there. When questioned by police, Erlbacher admitted taking the vehicle, which had been extensively damaged. As part of his sentence, he must pay $6,180.51 in restitution.
Robert Depalma, the other man arrested in the theft, is set to be sentenced July 11.
