Chance L. Wright, 34, who resigned as Johnson chief, is accused of paying a Springdale firefighter who didn't earn it.

A former fire chief and a firefighter have been charged with theft of funds after a probe uncovered an alleged scheme.

Johnson Fire Chief Chance Lamar Wright, 34, who resigned on May 13, is charged with abuse of office and theft, 5news reported.

He was released on $1,500 bail after his May 27 arrest.

Springdale Firefighter Brian William Copeland, 45, is accused of theft of property. He was released on bail Wednesday.

Copeland has been placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues.

“We are aware of the current situation and take charges against our employees seriously. He is on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into the facts of the case," Springdale Fire Chief Blake Holte said.

Police were notified by Johnson firefighters who saw a timecard with Copeland's name on it. The investigation showed Wright allegedly paid him although he didn't earn it.
