Removal of Battalion Chief Positions in Fort Myers Beach, FL, Department Draws Ire

June 3, 2025
"Without that leadership, there are concerns with safety..." IAFF Local President Henry Garcia said.

The move to eliminate battalion chiefs has provoked the ire of IAFF Local in Fort Myers Beach.

Two longtime battalion chiefs -- Tom Grow and Terry Brunson -- were given two options by Fire Chief Scott Wirth. They include stepping back into captain roles or collect a lump sum and retire, according to WFTX.

If they switch titles, they won't lose pay or benefits.

"The battalion chief is a crucial part of the fire service emergency ground, and you need that leadership. Without that leadership there are concerns with safety. Who's managing the scene? Who's making sure resources are acquired? Who's directing crews on the ground," Firefighters Local President Henry Garcia asked.

Wirth made the decision after studying other departments' structures. He said he felt the positions in Fort Myers Beach were "critically under utilized."

He noted that there's been a vacancy in the posiion for three years and it has not impacted operations.

But, Garcia argues the positions be maintained.

"...This is a termination or a demotion. Not for just cause, not for wrongdoing, just because the chief feels like that's what he wants to do at this time," he said.
