Feb. 27 --A former Hygiene fire captain was sentenced Friday to 55 years to life in prison for sexually assaulting five women, two of whom were teenagers, during his time at the department.

A Boulder County jury in December found Kamron Barnaby, 33, guilty on six counts of sexual assault, two counts of felony unlawful sexual contact, two counts of misdemeanor unlawful sexual contact, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and one count of sexual exploitation of children.

"Having just met with the victims and their loved ones, I can tell you, they're feeling a tremendous sense of relief and gratitude that the defendant has been sentenced to 55 years to life," Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty said after the hearing.

Boulder County District Court Judge Dea M. Lindsey sentenced Barnaby to prison, followed by 20 years to life of sex offender intensive supervision probation. The conditions of that probation include completion of a psychosexual evaluation and sex offense treatment. Barnaby may not have contact with any of the women.

The courtroom benches filled Friday afternoon with friends and family members of the five women. Many of Barnaby's friends and family members also attended.

All five women addressed the court, describing the harm Barnaby's actions — and the lengthy court process that followed — have caused them.

One woman said Barnaby's actions damaged her passion for the fire service. Another, who continues to work in the field, said each day she goes to work is a "harsh reminder of what happened."

"Hygiene Fire failed to protect me," one woman said.

"Today, his control over us ends, and it ends forever," another woman said.

All five women asked the court to consider the maximum sentence.

"Protection of future women and children matters," one woman said, expressing concern that Barnaby would reoffend.

Barnaby, who was pushed into the courtroom in a wheelchair, said that due to an injury, he couldn't prepare a statement. He asked the judge for mercy and compassion.

Barnaby injured his leg playing basketball at the Boulder County Jail, Dougherty said. Boulder County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Carrie Haverfield confirmed Barnaby was not injured in a physical altercation with another inmate or deputy.

The case was "one of the worst" Dougherty has seen since he began prosecuting sex crimes in 1997, he said in court Friday. He asked the court to sentence Barnaby to 84 years to life in prison, citing the number of victims and what he called Barnaby's lack of remorse.

Over 20 additional victims have said they were victims of sexual misconduct at the hands of Barnaby, Dougherty said.

Eric Zale, an attorney for the defense, asked the judge to consider a sentence on the low range, citing his belief that Barnaby has the ability to change. The possible sentence range was eight years to life in prison to 96 years to life in prison.

The defense also asked the court to consider delaying the sentencing. Zale argued that due to pain medications, Barnaby could not be fully present.

Lindsey declined to delay the sentencing, noting that Barnaby "seemed very coherent" throughout Friday's proceedings.

In her decision, Lindsey said she considered Barnaby's position as fire captain and the seriousness of the offense. There are "high expectations" for a person in such a position of power, she said, and there should be a "grave punishment" when those expectations are not met. She also noted that she believed Barnaby could be rehabilitated.

Lindsey addressed the five women directly.

"I hear you today. I see you today," she said, adding that throughout the case, the strength of all five women stood out.

"(Barnaby) was a true predator. I don't use that word lightly or often," Dougherty said after the hearing. "In this case, it's definitely appropriate. It was our honor to fight for justice for all of the victims."

Barnaby sexually assaulted the five women during his time at the Hygiene Fire Protection District, and many of those assaults occurred on fire department property, according to a release from the Boulder County District Attorney's Office. Three of the women were subordinate employees, and two were teenagers at the time. Barnaby also sent nude photos and videos of himself to each woman, the release said.

The investigation began after the Boulder County Sheriff's Office was notified of a sexual assault allegation made by a former Hygiene firefighter. Barnaby was first charged with eight felonies and two misdemeanors in 2023.
