Two Salem Fire&EMS members, accused of yelling a racial slur at a motorist, have been placed on leave.

The incident -- captured on a dash cam -- showed a passenger in a pickup truck using a racial slur at another driver on I-81.

After the incident, Lorenzo Dean and his mother, Nanette Uglade, called Virginia State Police as they followed the truck that had license plates from Salem fire department, WSLS reported.

When the truck stopped at Salem Fire Station 1, police were waiting. After officers gave the driver a sobriety test, Dean and his mother were asked to leave.

They have not been informed by police if the driver was charged but Salem fire officials confirmed the two were placed on leave after the off-duty incident.

“The Salem Fire-EMS Department remains committed to accountability and maintaining the trust of the community it serves,” the department wrote in a release.

Dean, a firefighter in Botetourt County, said the encounter made him fearful and concerned.

“The badge, it symbolizes so much. The public trusts us. Come into their homes. Treat them. It’s just, you know, I fear for the people in Salem, especially minorities. If he’s going to act that way like that, who knows how he’s going to treat patients and the public that they encounter.”

Dean said he hopes the incident leads to changes in how policies and standards are enforced.
