We are excited to return to Columbus, OH, for Firehouse Expo this year and enjoyed hearing the feedback about the new venue, the hands-on facilities and the overall experience in the city.
Columbus has much to offer for those who will travel to Firehouse Expo 2022 (Sept. 26–30), including a short trip from the airport to downtown, inexpensive hotels and a terrific nightlife. Last year, the restaurants welcomed firefighters to the city with open arms and ensured the breaking of bread would be memorable for all.
When the conference committee met, we wanted to ensure that popular and important classes would return, and we struck a balance that would provide opportunities for new speakers and topics about fire department responses and training.Class highlights include:
For Firefighters
Veteran FDNY Deputy Chief Tom Dunne will help firefighters to understand the stress that they endure on the fireground and how to overcome the challenges in his session, “Commanding Stress: A Firefighter’s Guide to Peak Performance.”
Communications on the fireground is a critical skill that many overlook. Jason Blake will present “Push/Pull Communications” for the first time, teaching crews about effective and important communications skills.
Attached garages are becoming the norm, whether in rural or urban settings, and they pose several challenges for fire crews. Join Mark Miller to learn the latest on construction tactics and more in “Ensuring Operational Success at Attached-Garage Fire Incidents.”
In “Attack from the Burned Side,” Sean Gray uses science to enhance current procedures that illustrate why different tasks and tactics can be used to extinguish fires that originate on the exterior and extend into the attic.
For Fire Officers
They say that the first few minutes makes the incident, so don’t miss Mike Terpak’s “Fireground Size-Up for the Engine, Truck and Chief” to dive head-first into an intense discussion on fireground size-up and how that affects the outcome of the incident.
Marc Aloan will encourage company officers whose reality of limited personnel is challenged when formal training is designed for fully staffed scenes in “The Hat Dance: Realities of the Short-Staffed C.O.”For Training Officers
Last year’s keynote speaker, Brian Brush, returns to help training officers to work through the “must-dos” and use the familiar incident command structure to enhance training in his session, “Division of Training.”
Recruit academies set the foundation for a firefighter’s career, and developing an effective program takes time. Join Keith Niemann for his session, “Building a Top-Shelf Recruit Academy,” and learn how to give rookies all that they need.
The above is a small sample of the new and returning sessions at Firehouse Expo 2022. Visit FirehouseExpo.com to find the full list of HOT classes, pre-conference workshops and classroom sessions.
As you make plans to join us in Columbus, please take note that we changed the event to fall during the week, beginning Monday, Sept. 26 and ending Friday, Sept. 30. Stick around for a great weekend in Columbus, including a football matchup between The Ohio State University Buckeyes and the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights on Saturday, Oct. 1.
