STATEN ISLAND, NY, DEC. 20, 2011 – It took firefighters nearly 90 minutes to control a fire in the attic of a private dwelling. The late-night fire required a second-alarm assignment. Photo by Steve White

HOBOKEN, NJ, DEC. 17, 2011 – A fast-moving fire consumed a vacant restaurant. Firefighters were initially dispatched for a gas leak, but upon arrival found heavy smoke pushing from the second-floor apartments. A second alarm was immediately transmitted. Heavy fire replaced the heavy smoke as firefighters switched to a defensive operation. The fire was placed under control in about three hours. About a half-dozen people were left homeless.
