NEW YORK CITY, JAN. 3, 2012 – As temperatures dropped into the teens and wind chills were in the single digits for the first time this season, FDNY firefighters battled a three-alarm fire that consumed a large taxpayer in upper Manhattan. Engine 95 arrived and transmitted a 10-75, working fire, for heavy smoke from a restaurant that was one of about eight businesses in the 100-by-100-foot, two-story building. Flames extended upward and showed through the roof and a second alarm was transmitted. The roof was beginning to sag due to a large air conditioning unit, and the decision was made to order all members off the roof and to go defensive. NORTH BERGEN, NJ, JAN. 11, 2012 – North Hudson Regional firefighters rescued a woman trapped in her third-floor apartment during a raging fire that raced through three three-story mixed occupancies. Off-duty Fire Captain Frank Martinez guided incoming units to the location where the occupant was trapped. Captain Jim McDonough and Firefighter Richard Gora of Rescue Company 1 located the woman in the only room of her apartment that wasn't burning and took her to a rear window. Captain Pat Cospito and Firefighter Thomas Haemmerle of Engine Company 9 set up a ground ladder in a narrow rear alley, and the victim was taken down to safety. She was treated for smoke inhalation. Two firefighters were also injured. An explosion was heard before the fire was discovered. A space heater is believed to be the cause of the four-alarm fire. Photo by Ron Jeffers
NOVI, MI, JAN. 10, 2012 – The Novi Fire Department received a call stating a dwelling was on fire. While enroute, dispatch reported a civilian was trapped. Firefighters found a two-story dwelling fully involved. Director of Fire Operations Jeff Johnson requested all four Novi fire stations to the scene. Lines were stretched to the front of the house and a search for the trapped civilian was started. After knocking down some of the fire, firefighters entered the house and pulled the husband out to safety. He was transported to the University of Michigan Hospital, where he survived. UNION CITY, NJ, JAN. 18, 2012 – An eight-alarm fire tore through a row of six attached wood-frame multiple-occupancies. The fire started in the basement and spread via the walls and into the cockloft. Mutual aid assisted from Bayonne, Harrison, Hoboken, Jersey City, Newark and Secaucus.
