    COVER STORY: Space Shuttle Enterprise gets an Escort

    The Space Shuttle Enterprise passes the new World Trade Center Tower 1, where the steel has been completed to its top floor of 104. A tower of some kind, possibly up to 400 feet, may rise from the upper floors next. The building to the right of the 104-story tower with sky cranes visible is the next tower to be rebuilt at the World Trade Center. Building 4 has just reached its scheduled height of 79 stories.

    On June 6, 2012, the Space Shuttle Enterprise is pushed North up the Hudson River between New York and New Jersey on its way to its place on the retired aircraft carrier USS Intrepid. The space shuttle will be on display soon. This location is 1½ blocks from the closest FDNY firehouse, the quarters of Rescue 1, the first rescue company in America, which will celebrate its centennial in 2015. Atop a transport jet a few weeks earlier, the Space Shuttle took a low-level sightseeing trip over the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area before landing at John F. Kennedy International Airport, where it was offloaded onto the barge that would bring it to the Intrepid. The Enterprise was the first space shuttle orbiter. It was used in numerous tests, but never flew in space.
