This 3 day symposium will be presented by Deputy Assistant Chief (Ret.) John Norman, FDNY. Chief Norman will be discuss the Chief/Command Officer's roles and responsibilities at Fires, Collapse, and Technical Rescue Incidents, as well as, Leadership Development.
The first 2 days will focus on Command and Control - the Chief/Command Officer's role at fires in private dwellings, stores, garden apartments, townhouses, and apartment buildings.
The first half of the third day will focus on Command and Control of Collapse and Technical Rescue Incidents. This session will use illustrations to acquaint the students with some of the most common situations, and guide them through the decision making process for safely and successfully resolving these events. Case studies are used from a variety of actual events both single and multi-jurisdictional, long, intermediate, and short term events; including water main breaks, major airplane crashes, building collapses, weather related events, terrorist events, and other large scale disasters.
The symposium will be concluded with Chief Norman talking about Leadership Development, which would include: The Basics of Leadership, Fireground Leadership, Strategic Leadership, Mentoring and Succession Planning.
Chief Norman is a 40 year veteran of the fire service, serving in urban, suburban, and rural fire departments. Chief Norman was assigned to some of the busiest companies in the FDNY. Prior to his retirement Chief Norman was in charge of the FDNY's Special Operations Command and also served as a City Wide Tour Commander.
