Two Black Mountain firefighters and a police officer were injured while responding to a crash Monday night, according to The Asheville Citizen-Times.

Firefighters Christopher Scott Lanning and William John Anderson and Officer Thomas Lytle were at the scene of a one-vehicle wreck shortly after 5 p.m. on I-40.

An oncoming vehicle hydroplaned into Lytle's cruiser that he was inside of and pushed it into the two firefighters who were assisting the injured motorist.

All three responders were transported to Mission Hospital with minor injuries.

Two people inside the vehicle that hit the cruiser also were transported to the hospital.

Trooper John L. Crabb told the newspaper that heavy rain, slick tires and speed caused the crash.

"It's another example of how much attention people need to pay to what they're doing on the interstate, especially when there's bad weather," Deputy Fire Chief Craig Bannerman said. "Neither of our responders have broken bones, just bruised and banged up."
