Two people were hospitalized after being rescued and revived by fire and rescue personnel during a Thursday morning Staunton house fire.
Staunton Fire Chief Scott Garber said firefighters rescued two people from a basement bedroom at the 814 West Avenue fire.
"They were unconscious when we brought them out, but they were revived on the scene,'' Garber said.
The two people were subsequently taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center for treatment of smoke inhalation and other conditions. The six other people in the house evacuated on their own, he said.
Garber said his department and Augusta County Fire-Rescue were able to get the fire in the house under control in about 10 minutes. He said the house, with a wood frame and brick exterior, had smoke and fire damage to its basement, and smoke damage to the first floor. There is no damage estimate and the cause of the fire remains under investigation, Garber said.
Fire companies from Swoope and Verona covered for Staunton while the department fought the fire. The fire was reported about 7:50 a.m. The Staunton-Augusta Rescue Squad also responded and assisted with the injured people.
