INDIANAPOLIS --
Two Indianapolis Fire Department firefighters were injured while battling a massive apartment fire late Saturday on the city’s near east side.
Minutes before midnight, IFD crews were dispatched to the 1200 block of East Washington Street on reports of a two-alarm fire.
When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke and fire spewing from the Washington Arms Apartments.
For the next two hours, crews worked furiously to douse the flames coming from all three vacant buildings.
Two injured firefighters suffering from chest pains and dehydration were rushed to Methodist Hospital.
IFD spokeswoman Rita Burris said all three apartment buildings suffered $500,000 in damages and are a total loss.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
