A now 6-year-old Stallion Springs boy battling cancer got a birthday surprise he is sure to never forget.
Most 6-year-olds get toy fire engines for their birthday, but for Nicholas Sharp, he got the chance to play on a real fire engine.
Sharp's family told 23ABC that he's terrified of fire trucks and its loud sirens.
On Monday afternoon, the Kern County Fire Department's Company 16 made quite the entrance to show him they're the good guys.
Captain Randy Carver of the KCFD bent down and shook Sharp's hand and introduced himself after driving down the road in the fire engines.
Carver wished Sharp a happy birthday and handed him a toy fire truck.
"It is irreplaceable in any of the great moments we have in this career, but those are some of the best," Carver said.
"We were really excited to hear the fire department was going to come out and visit him," said Danielle Sharp, Nicholas' mother. "With everything going on, it kind of gives you a little bit more hope and keeps your spirits lifted."
Sharp has been battling lymphoma cancer in the lymphatic cells of his immune system.
Sharp's family said he almost didn't make it home for his birthday. He spent the past three weeks at Children's Hospital of Central California battling pneumonia.
The fire department took Sharp on a ride in the fire truck too.
"We are really happy and really blessed, and Nicholas is really happy too," said Danielle. "He is so excited. It helps him a lot too because for being only 6 he has gone through a lot, a lot more than I think anyone would go through in their life."
