Nov. 09--Two people were displaced this morning after a fire swept through a single-story duplex in the Japantown neighborhood of San Jose, according to a fire captain.
The two-alarm blaze was reported at 6:36 a.m. in a duplex located in the 700 block of North Second Street, near East Taylor Street, according to San Jose fire Capt. Mary Gutierrez. The resident first called the fire department to say her couch was on fire; dispatchers then received numerous other 911 calls reporting heavy smoke in the area.
The first firefighters to arrive reported seeing heavy fire coming from the front of the house. Firefighters called a second-alarm and had the blaze contained by 7 a.m., Gutierrez said.
Both residents safely got out of the duplex. There were no injuries reported, Gutierrez said.
Fire investigators are saying the blaze was accidental but have not determined the cause, Gutierrez said.
The unit of the duplex where the fire started suffered about $200,000 in damage. The adjacent unit suffered heavy smoke damage.
The American Red Cross Silicon Valley Chapter has been called to help the displaced residents find temporary housing.
