A Detroit factory, which went idle a couple of months ago, was destroyed by an early morning fire.

Firefighters were called out to the building at 20237 Groesbeck Highway around 5:20 a.m. Monday, but officials say it had been burning for some time before the initial 911 call came in.

The two-alarm blaze was even more challenging for firefighters because of the condition of the building.

"Scrappers cut the roof joists and beams, like every other one," Detroit Fire Captain Steve Varnas said. "These scrappers should be prosecuted."

The roof collapsed, but no one was hurt.

Varnas did not yet know whether the fire was set intentionally or not.

Thick black smoke filled the intersection at Groesbeck Highway and 8 Mile, which was closed as firefighters fought back flames.

Just to the west, Hoover, which runs behind the old factory, was also closed to traffic as crews worked to extinguish the fire.
