Hunter, 84, dies in deer stand accident

A hunter from the Twin Cities died when his clothing caught fire while he was trying to light a heater in his deer stand Saturday morning in rural St. Louis County, authorities said.

Arthur Joseph Knafla, 84, of Maple Grove died at the scene of the accident, southeast of Hibbing, about 9:45 a.m., the St. Louis County sheriff's office said.

According to the Duluth News Tribune, a news release said Knafla was attempting to light the propane heater in his partially enclosed deer stand and fell from the stand when his clothes caught fire.

Saturday was the opening day of Minnesota's firearms deer season.
