KANSAS CITY, Mo. --
Kansas City firefighters said they pulled a woman from a burning home in southeast Kansas City on Wednesday afternoon.
Crews said they were called to the home at East 98th Street and Wheeling Avenue just before 2 p.m. and said they found an intense fire burning in the kitchen when they got there.
A child who lives nearby and a man mowing lawns in the neighborhood first spotted the smoke from the fire and saw the woman in the window.
Neighbor Marj Humphrey said the man mowing lawns tried to save the woman.
"(He) got off his lawn mower and turned it off, saw her in the bathroom window, then heard her crash, like she fell down," Humphrey said. "He banged in the front door and went in the front door, but couldn't get any farther than the top of the steps."
Humphrey said the man called 911.
Firefighters said they brought the woman out of the house soon after they arrived. She was taken to a hospital, but no details have been released about her name or her condition.
