Oct. 21--A fire was set at an Antioch elementary school Thursday night, marking the second time this month the school has been the site of arson.

Bushes and trees in four areas around Diablo Vista Elementary were scorched around 8:30 p.m., said David Kundert, maintenance director for the Antioch school district.

After firefighters put out the blazes, district maintenance crews scoured the site for any other signs of vandalism, and security guards stayed at the school overnight, Kundert said.

Two weeks ago, large trash bins were set ablaze outside the school's multipurpose room, damaging the wall. It was also tagged with graffiti. And a window was broken and computer stolen last week.

A play structure at Lone Tree Elementary, located about a mile away, also was set ablaze twice this month.

Antioch Unified plans to have extra security guards at each site over the weekend, Kundert said.

District officials ask those who live near schools to call police if they spot suspicious activity or trespassers.
