A dozen Jersey City firefighters were hospitalized after responding to an explosion caused by insect bombs Sunday morning, according to The Jersey Journal.

All 12 firefighter suffered from respiratory distress following the call and were transported to Jersey City Medical Center for observation, Fire Director Armando Roman told the newspaper.

Crews responded to reports of an explosion inside a first floor apartment at 129 Magnolia Avenue at approximately 10:19 a.m.

No one was home, and the firefighters fell ill just as they forced entry into the unit.

Officials said the blast was most likely caused by a pilot on a stove that wasn't turned off.

"The instructions on the back of those cans are microscopic so people don't read them," Roman said. "I am going to start a public education campaign on this issue .... These manufacturers need to put bigger warnings."

The firefighters were set to be released Sunday.
