HOMESTEAD, Pa. --
A family of four had to be rescued from the rooftop of their burning home early Friday morning.
The fire started before 3 a.m. at a home in the 300 block of West 13th Street in Homestead.
Channel 4 Action News' Sarah Arbogast reported that when firefighters arrived, they discovered four people on the roof of the porch, frantic to get help, as the flames tore through the building.
A couple and their two daughters had climbed out of a second-story window because they could not make it downstairs. The mother told Channel 4 Action News that she woke to the smell of smoke and couldn't escape to the ground floor because the stairs were on fire.
Fire crews used extension ladders to help the two girls down first, before rescuing the mother and father.
"It's a very dangerous situation, just being on a rooftop, not being able to go anywhere. So we tried to make a fast break to get a ladder up there and help them down to the ground level as fast as possible," said Ron-Del May of the Homestead Volunteer Fire Department.
The fire chief said the fire started somewhere on the first floor.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
