The South Florida city of Hialeah plans to lay off more than 100 firefighters due to budget cuts passed Wednesday night, according to The Miami Herald.
On Saturday, 14 firefighters and nine trainees will be let go and 12 vacancies will be eliminated.
An additional 70 firefighters will be dismissed -- half on Dec. 1 and the other half on March 1.
The layoffs amount to 39 percent of the fire department.
Fire union president, Mario Pico, told the newspaper that the budget was "plagued by inconsistencies" and put together without proper transparency.
"What we have always asked for is clear numbers, but all we have gotten is contradictory economic information," he said.
The city approved a $263.4 million budget for 2011-12 amid heated debate and that lasted close to 90 minutes.
