ROSEVILLE, Calif. --

After a leak in a 4-inch gas line caused the surface of a Roseville street to catch fire, sparking flames that shot up six feet from the underground pipe, crews finally managed to shut off the gas around 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Firefighters were called to Cirby Way and Riverside Avenue just before 7 p.m. Tuesday, they said.

Crews worked to contain the fire and employees of Pacific Gas and Electric dug holes 50 feet down to each side of the leak in order to cap it. People working in nearby businesses were ordered to evacuate.

Police temporarily closed Riverside Avenue between the Interstate 80 exchange and Kenroy Lane and Cirby Lane between Melody Lane and Orlando Avenue.

The intersection was shut down but has since reopened, with a portion of Cirby Way still closed for repairs.

No injuries were reported.
