OKLAHOMA CITY --

Firefighters spent hours battling hot spots after a fire gutted a Pike Pass office in northwest Oklahoma City.

Multiple crews were called to a shopping center near Memorial Road and Meridian Avenue. Flames could be seen shooting from the roof of the Pike Pass office. Firefighters battled the flames from all sides of the building and from above. At one point firefighters were inside the burning structure, but escaped a few minutes before the roof collapsed.

Fire officials said the fire started in the back of the Pike Pass office and crews were able to contain the fire and keep damage to nearby businesses minimal.

Jack Damrill with the Turnpike Authority told Eyewitness News 5 that business operations will have to be moved. The burned office handles customer relations, so the Turnpike Authority is working on finding a temporary location and re-routing calls. At this time, they are asking customers to hold-off on calling their offices until a temporary office has been set up.

Damrill said they handle around 500,000 driver accounts but that information was not lost in the fire and is routinely backed up nightly at another office.
