ALBANY, N.Y. -- Firefighters rescued a young woman trapped in a second floor apartment after a fire broke out in a first-floor apartment in the West End.

A fire happened at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at 71 North Allen St., said Albany Fire Department Battalion Chief Bill Hummel. When fire crews arrived, the first floor of the three-story building was engulfed in heavy fire, Hummel said.

People in the first floor apartment escaped safely. Firefighters found the woman calling for help on the second floor and used a back stairway to get her out of the building. "It's what we call a good grab," Hummel said.

The woman, who was not identified, was taken to Albany Medical Center for smoke inhalation.

The fire was doused in 25 minutes, and the damage was limited to the first floor, he said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
