Four Wading River firefighters were hospitalized Thursday night after rescuing three stranded boaters on the Long Island Sound, according to The Miller Place-Rocky Point Patch.
Crews responded after receiving a call at approximately 7:45 a.m. for a 30-foot long sailboat that was taking on water, Wading River Fire Chief Jim Evans told the news website.
The department's marine crew assisted a Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau unit that made it to the scene first.
The three men on the sinking boat were eventually pulled to safety and were transported to St. Charles Hospital for treatment of hypothermia and nausea.
Evan said the four firefighters were taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead as a precaution to be evaluated for hypothermia.
