Evansville firefighters pulled a woman and her two young daughters from a closet inside a burning apartment Tuesday night, according to The Evansville Courier & Press.
Crews responded to the Covert Villas at 869 Covert Avenue shortly after 5 p.m.
The fire started in the children's bedroom in the second-floor apartment. The mother's husband said the children may have been playing with a lighter.
Kristyn Frazier, 24, and her daughters, Aaliyah, 4, and Akeleigh, 3, remained in critical but stable condition on Wednesday at St. Mary's Medical Center
All three were treated for smoke inhalation. Frazier is under sedation while her daughters were on ventilators, which were expected to be removed that afternoon.
A total of 12 people were displaced by the fire, which is currently under investigation.
There were no smoke detectors in the apartments and the owners of the building are facing a $2,500 fine.
