Nine Millbury firefighters and a police officer were hospitalized following a chemical spill Tuesday afternoon, according to The Telegram & Gazette.
The spill was contained with only a small amount being absorbed by the ground and no one was seriously injured, officials told the newspaper.
"The situation is very much under control," Millbury Fire Chief Matthew R. Belsito said at the scene. "It is my understanding at this time that everyone was transported as precautionary and they will probably be treated and released."
Crews received the call shortly after 1:30 p.m. for a Barrday worker doused with the chemical phenol. A company engineer was working on an outside storage tank containing about 10,000 gallons of the chemical when the incident occurred.
After removing a wire, the tank began to leak and sprayed the liquid phenolic resin onto his arm. A second employee was having trouble breathing and both men were transported to a local hospital.
Firefighters from several communities and the regional Hazmat crew were dispatched to the scene.
