ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. --
A woman and her toddler son were injured when their minivan crashed into a gas station pump, causing the vehicle to burst into flames on Monday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The accident happened around 2:00 a.m. at the Chevron gas station on South Orange Blossom Trail near 38th Street.
Officials said the woman, 25-year-old Noelia Gallego Luciano, lost control of her minivan on Orange Blossom Trail and crossed several lanes of oncoming traffic, crossed over a median, ran over three street signs and plowed through bushes, slamming her minivan into a pump at the gas station.
Then the van caught fire, according to troopers.
WFTV spoke to 18-year-old Cody Burcham who said he just did what anyone would have done when he sprang into action to help save the passengers in the vehicle.
“We were coming out the store and all we heard was, 'Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!' " he said.
Burcham had just left work at the Checkers across the street when he said he realized a little boy was inside the minivan and the gas pump was on fire.
“I just knew somebody was still in there and I could see the flames getting bigger on the gas pump and there was people just standing around,” he said.
Burcham said he then reached inside the vehicle and pulled the boy out.
“I didn’t do nothing but pick him up. I reached through the car and I took him to the restaurant across the street and I was wiping the blood off and moving his arms and stuff to make sure he wasn't hurt,” said Burcham.
Firefighters responded and were able to quickly get the fire under control. Emergency crews transported the mother to Orlando Regional Medical Center and the toddler to Arnold Palmer Hospital. Officials said both of them suffered minor injuries.
Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused his mother to lose control. The Florida Highway Patrol said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The toddler's name was not released.
Several witness told WFTV the woman smelled like alcohol, but investigators have not confirmed that.
