A fire in Vincennes claimed the life of a young child and seriously injured a mother as crews rushed inside to try to save them, according to WTHI-TV.
Firefighters were called to the blaze around 8:30 a.m. in the 1900 block of North Second Street.
When they arrived, they encountered heavy smoke conditions and while two occupants already made it out, others were still inside; Assistant Fire Chief David Halter told the news station.
"The initial crew couldn't make entry into the room from the interior because of the fire conditions," he said. "We did have fire coming out of some of the windows."
They were eventually able to pull a young woman and child from a window.
Both were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital and the 15-month-old girl was pronounced dead.
