A former Canadian firefighter turned NFL player was able to put the skills he learned in his previous career to use after a teammate collapsed after experiencing a seizure during practice Wednesday morning.

Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Danny Watkins -- who was a firefighter in West Kelowna, British Columbia before excelling in football at Baylor University -- assisted medical staff after defensive tackle Mike Patterson went down.

"The staff here, they know what they're doing. Those guys are trained professionals," Watkins said on the team's website. "I was trying to help where I could."

Patterson was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital for tests, but had no complications from the seizure.

"You see something like that and you automatically want to help the guy," Watkins said. "You want to help him even more because he's your teammate. My thoughts and prayers are going to be with him tonight."

This was Watkins' first day of practice after signing a four-year rookie contract with the team on Monday.
