FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. --

Firefighters from Forsyth County fire departments stood on bridges Friday as the body of a fellow North Carolina firefighter made its processional from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center back to Asheville following an autopsy.

Capt. Jeffrey Bowen, a 13-year veteran of the Asheville Fire Department, died at Mission Hospital after suffering injuries fighting a blaze that broke out Thursday at an Asheville medical building.

The Clemmons Fire Department set up along Harper Road, hanging an American flag from one of its ladder trucks. And, on one of the hottest days of the year, the firefighters put on their gear and stood watch as the motorcade passed by.

Clemmons fire chief Jerry Brooks said firefighters know their job is dangerous, but having a loss like this is always just as hard.

"It's part of a brotherhood and we've had a loss. I didn't know the young man personally, but that's what we do -- what our firefighters do daily. It's important that we be here for the Ashville Fire Department and his family," Brooks said.

Bowen was 37 years old. He leaves behind a wife and three children.

Ten other firefighters were also treated at the hospital for injuries suffered fighting the fire.
