KANSAS CITY, Mo. --

A Kansas City firefighter escaped injury after a fire destroyed his home early Sunday.

Firefighters said they were called to the man's home near the Liberty city limits at about 1:30 a.m. for a small fire inside the house. Crews said they put the fire out and cleared the scene.

KMBC 9's Justin Robinson said crews were called back to the scene at about 4:45 a.m. and found the home engulfed in flames. The roof of the house caved in shortly after firefighters returned to the scene.

The man inside the house got out safely, firefighters said. The other occupants of the home were out of town, investigators said. Firefighters said they were looking into reports that fireworks were going off in the area.

Firefighters said the house is located more than a mile from the nearest hydrant, so they had to bring water to the scene.

Investigators said they were working at the scene to try to determine how the fire started.
