Texas Dept. Deals With Death of Boy They Saved

July 7, 2011

Roma firefighters are coming to grips with the death of a young boy they rescued from a Fourth of July crash.

The crash on U.S. 83 in Rio Grande City trapped 8-year-old Gustavo Noel Vega and fire crews worked to free him, according to KRGV-TV.

Roma Assistant Chief Alfredo Garza told the news station that the call was especially tough for him because his daughter is also 8 years old.

"I'm thinking, 'Here's a little boy . . . We gotta get him out as quickly as we can."

Crews used the Jaws of Life to cut through the car and were able to pull him from the wreckage.

Gustavo fought for his life but would succumb to his injuries Tuesday night.

"It makes you value more your children. You go home. And you cry and hold your kids in your arms. And you hold them really tight," Garza said.

"In the back of your mind, you're thinking about that parent that just lost their son or daughter."
