MONROE, Ohio --

A Monroe firefighter was honored during the city's July 4 parade after he lost his three-year battle with brain cancer.

Kenny Ellis had previously worked as a firefighter in Fairfield, Liberty Township and Springdale.

"Kenny was just a great guy," said John Centers, assistant chief of the Monroe fire department. "We like hanging around him, we liked being around him. He was just an engaging person that people kind of migrated towards and talked to. Just a super, super guy."

The 55-year-old Ellis died last week and will be laid to rest Friday.

"You get to the point where you realize they're not going to be here anymore, and there's a void that we can't fill," Centers said.

Ellis' death is considered to have been in the line of duty, so he will be buried with full honors.

The funeral service will be held Friday at noon at the Princeton Pike Church of God, with burial to follow at Spring Grove Cemetery.
