Woman Killed in South Carolina Kitchen Fire

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Spartanburg County Fire Marshal said a woman died in a kitchen fire Saturday morning. Firefighters arrived at the Magnolia Townhomes around 5:30 a.m., Saturday and found smoke visible from the exterior of the complex. Once inside the home, firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze.

The Spartanburg County Fire Marshal said a woman died in a kitchen fire Saturday morning.

Firefighters arrived at the Magnolia Townhomes around 5:30 a.m., Saturday and found smoke visible from the exterior of the complex.

Once inside the home, firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze.

According to investigators, a woman living at the home made it out safely, but her daughter was found in an upstairs bedroom after the fire. The daughter was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Investigators said the daughter had arrived home without her mother's knowledge and started cooking.

A cause of death for Ashley Samone Meadows-Garnette, 22, has not been determined, the Spartanburg County Coroner's Office is waiting on autopsy and toxicology reports.

Authorities said the fire also caused some damage to other homes.

The American Red Cross was helping anyone affected by the fire.
