HONOLULU --
The sound of the rocks crashing down on two homes was heard by Palolo firefighters who were in their station at the time.
The largest of the boulders was described as half the size of a vehicle. The rock fall happened at 5:30 p.m. Friday damaging two homes at 2091A and 2089 10th Ave.
Two of the rocks fell into a bedroom, destroying the room pretty extensively. A third fell through the roof. It narrowly missed a young child who was using the bathroom and fell though the floor of the building. A third boulder hit a shed in the house next door, said Honolulu Fire Capt. Earle Kealoha.
The fire department recommended that five families evacuate as a precaution, but two opted to remain in their homes overnight. The American Red Cross assisted two people with lodging overnight.
One couple, who said they were renters, decided to spend the night elsewhere.
I was in by bedroom and I heard this crunching noise, said Laura Chartier.
I was in the shower and it sounded like a truck crashing into our neighbors driveway and I head it again and looked out the window and I didnt see anything, said Jesse Gelis.
But when Gelis went outside, he saw the damage to the structures.
Theres a huge divet. It hit our neighbor Dwights house and cracked the floor he just put on and pushed the foundation a bit, Gelis said.
Damage is estimated at $100,000.
Kealoha believes that the boulder was dislodged from private property.
State Civil Defense will be working with the families Saturday as they try and determine if there is still a threat of other boulders becoming dislodged.
