SAN ANTONIO --

Savitree Srisunakorn nearly lost her son, Chase, last month, and she took time Wednesday to make sure hospital staff and first responders know she's grateful she didn't.

At an afternoon ceremony at Methodist Children's Hospital, Srisunakorn awarded plaques with Chase's picture on them to Intensive Care nurses, hospital staff and paramedics and firefighters, along with a heart-felt "Thank you."

"We wanted to acknowledge the great work they do on a daily basis," said Srisunakorn.

Chase Carlson was supposed to be taking a nap on April 27, but instead woke up and wandered into his grandmother's yard. His grandmother, alerted by her dog, walked outside and found Chase face-down in the hot tub and immediately started performing CPR.

"One of the firefighters came out with Chase, who was very blue, very limp, and very cold," said Shawn McDonald, one of the first paramedics on scene.

Paramedics rushed Chase to Methodist Children's Hospital, where he was immediately taken into Intensive Care. He spent a week in the hospital, but suffered no permanent physical or neurological damage.

"The fact that he survived and he's got no ongoing complications is nothing short of miraculous," said McDonald.

Srisunakorn said Chase has some problems with balance, but has been assured the issue can be corrected with physical therapy.
