An Elkhart fire lieutenant was suspended for three days after he told the driver of the ambulance he was riding in not to stop after hitting a truck in March, according to The Elkhart Truth.
Lt. Bill Sullivan and driver Amado Tanguma were responding to a medical call on March 15 when they clipped the back of a truck parked at Main Street and Beardsley Avenue around 3 p.m. after swerving to avoid a car backing out of a driveway.
Sullivan ordered Tanguma to continue to the medical call after the driver asked if he should stop, Assistant Fire Chief Shaun Edgerton told the Elkhart Board of Public Safety on Tuesday.
They treated the patient who was having trouble breathing, then called for another ambulance to take him to the hospital.
Fire Chief Michial Compton determined Sullivan was more at fault for leaving the scene of the crash, which is illegal and violated departmental policy.
Tanguma was given a written warning.
