Kinloch volunteer firefighters are working in the dark after falling behind on their electric bill, according to KSDK-TV.

They have been without electricity for about a week and a generator is all they have to operate in their firehouse.

"It only gives us enough electricity to run the radio system and maybe one light," Firefighter Edward Darden told the news station.

The firefighters have been forced to navigate the station with flashlights and keep warm by bundling up in turnout gear.

The department started to fall behind on its payments late last year and worked out a plan with Ameren Missouri, but after they weren't paid up by the end of February, the lights went off.

Ameren agreed to limit the department to 15 amps of power for essential functions but about a week ago that too went away.

"We would not jeopardize the safety of the public," Ameren customer service director Bruce Fritz told the news station.

He said he was unaware the department lost power completely and that they should be working on a limited basis.

Firefighters say that they are willing try to do their jobs in their current conditions, but they hope it doesn't hinder response times.
