ORLANDO, Fla. --
Investigators will now look for clues into what sparked a fire inside an Orange County apartment early Saturday morning.
The man living at the Village Condos near Texas Avenue was able to break out a window to escape the flames, but a nearby neighbor came to the rescue of the five children who were still inside the apartment.
Mark Ward was sleeping and woke up and began crawling along the floor to find an escape, but could not find the door.
"I had to just dive through the window. I got scars here. I got scars on my knee. I got scars here where I dove through the window," said Ward.
Once Ward was outside, he realized the five kids, all younger than nine, were still upstairs sleeping. Ward called for help and one neighbor dialed 911 while the other sprung into the apartment.
"This guy came in three times, two times and saved the kids, because I couldn't make it up there, because I have a heart condition. But we got everyone out safe," Ward says.
By the time firefighters were able to put out the fire, almost everything inside was damaged and the apartment was unlivable.
The American Red Cross is helping the family.
