SAN ANTONIO --
A fire damaged a south side Laundromat Friday morning, but the damage could have been worse had it not been for an alert retired San Antonio firefighter.
The fire department said the former firefighter was walking his dog at around 4 a.m. when he saw thick, heavy smoke coming from a building in the 2600 block of Nogalitos Street. He immediately called the department.
When firefighters arrived, they initially could not find anything, but eventually found a small fire in the very back of the building.
The owner told firefighters he had a similar situation a couple of weeks ago when someone set some trash on fire behind the Laundromat.
The arson unit was called to investigate and said the fire appeared to be suspicious. Damages at the Laundromat are estimated at $10,000.
