MOUNT AIRY, N.C. --

Linda Johnson is praising two Mount Airy firefighters who she said went above the call of duty to make sure she wasn't a victim.

Johnson called 911 earlier this week after she mishandled some dry ice and was frightened by fumes that filled her kitchen.

When firefighters Mike McCraw and Kenneth Simmons arrived, they checked things out and assured her that she wasn't in danger.

But McCraw and Simmons also noticed something during their search of the house that could have been deadly: exposed wiring from a garbage disposal under Johnson's kitchen sink cabinet.

Johnson said the two warned her of the danger and encouraged her to get it fixed.

Two hours later they showed back up at Johnson's house unannounced and fixed the wiring problem themselves. Johnson said they even spent their own money on parts for the repair.

McCraw and Simmons told WXII on Friday that their efforts were all in a day's work.
