INDIANAPOLIS --

Seven dogs were killed and one person was rescued in a house fire on Indianapolis' north side early Monday morning.

The fire broke out before 7 a.m. in the 5700 block of Crittenden Avenue, near Keystone Avenue and Kessler Boulevard.

Indianapolis fire officials said three people live in the home -- a man, his wife and their adult son.

The son was the only person in the home at the time. His parents had gone to work.

"I'm stuck on my roof," the victim told a 911 dispatcher. "Help me."

"He woke up when he smelled smoke and fire alarms activated," said Indianapolis fire Capt. Rita Burris. "The smoke was so thick that it pushed him to go out onto the roof."

A neighbor threw a ladder onto the roof, and the man was able to use it to get down and escape the blaze.

The woman who lives in the home is involved in animal rescues. All seven dogs in the home perished in the fire.

Damage to the home was estimated at $100,000. It was not immediately known what sparked the blaze.
