AMESBURY, Mass. --

Rescue crews are searching for a car that apparently drove off the Whittier Bridge.

Coast Guard officials said the incident happened on Route 95 at about 8:15 p.m. Monday.

Officials said they don’t know how many people were in the car.

A search helicopter was deployed to the scene, along with 47-foot and 25-foot rescue boats to search the Merrimack River, Coast Guard commanders said.

State police said they received several calls for a car going over the bridge. Officers said the state police were also responding to the scene with a helicopter and a dive team.

Commanders said a Coast Guard cutter is at the scene and an additional cutter is escorting members of the Massachusetts State Police Dive Team to the bridge. The Coast Guard said the waters were calm but icy.

The Amesbury Fire Department has an airboat at scene, as well.
