LAKEWOOD, Colo. --

One of two boys chasing ducks on the ice-covered Main Reservoir in Lakewood fell through the ice but was rescued Thursday.

According to Lakewood police, 13-year-old and 8-year-old boys were on the ice when the older boy fell into the water after the ice gave way underneath him.

West Metro Fire and Rescue received the call at 4:30 p.m. and immediately responded to the location near Florida Avenue and Kipling Street.

"I heard some faint cries and then definitely some screams for help after that," said Blake Goldberg who was on a walk at the time.

"I went back to my truck as fast as I could. I grabbed some extension cords," said Goldberg.

He was untangling the cords when the fire department arrived.

A firefighter, tethered to a safety line, went out on the ice in a prone position and was able to pull the boy from the water, according to Micki Trost of West Metro Fire.

"I went right up to the edge of the ice," said Lt. Sean O'Hara, who went into the water.

The two were pulled over the ice to safety by other firefighters.

"He was really blue and shaking and shivering and pretty excited we were there getting him."

The teenager was evaluated at the scene and was released to his parents.

"Definitely had to take some breaths after. But I was glad everything came out OK. That was the most important thing," said Goldberg.

West Metro reminds residents that the ice is extremely unstable on local bodies of water and venturing out onto the ice is dangerous.
