OVERLAND PARK, Kan. --

An Overland Park woman was taken to a hospital after she backed her car through the garage door of her home while attempting to escape a fire.

The incident happened just after 8 p.m. at a home in the 11000 block of 115th Street.

Overland Park firefighters said the woman reported her kitchen was on fire, so she grabbed her cat and jumped into her car in her garage.

The woman told firefighters the garage door wouldn’t open, so she backed through it to escape.

The woman is expected to recover. The cat is also expected to be OK.

Firefighters said the damage to the kitchen was minor, and they believe food left cooking on the stove caused the fire.
