BOSTON --
A mailman rescued a 96-year-old man from his burning home in Lexington on Friday.
The fire was reported at about 11:30 a.m. at 29 Fern St.
According to neighbor Valerie Upham, mailman Stephen Nester discovered the fire and called 911, Wicked Local Lexington reported.
Nester reportedly saw smoke, parked his truck and entered the building to help resident Albert Whitcomb, 96, get out. Whitcomb lives with his son, who was not at home at the time.
Upham told the paper she has become good friends with Nester and is not surprised that he would go to such efforts to help one of her neighbors.
"He takes his job very seriously. He's a good neighbor and a good friend. We're very blessed to have him as our postman," she said.
There were no reports of any injuries, but firefighters had problems accessing a fire hydrant that was covered in snow.
